If you are wondering how to crouch in GTA 5, the honest answer is that Grand Theft Auto V has no free crouch button. Rockstar split the idea into two systems instead: the cover system, which makes your character duck behind low objects, and Stealth Mode, which lowers your stance and quietens your footsteps. As of October 2026 the same is true online. This guide shows the controls for both on every platform and explains where mods fit in.
If you arrived from our GTA 5 mobile apk page, note that the game officially runs only on PC, PlayStation and Xbox, so these are the controls for those versions.

Crouch Controls on PC, PlayStation and Xbox
| Action | PC | PlayStation | Xbox |
|---|---|---|---|
| Take or leave cover (crouches behind low objects) | Q | R1 | RB |
| Stealth Mode (on or off) | Left Ctrl | L3 (press left stick) | Left stick press |
| Peek and aim from cover | Right mouse button | L2 | LT |
| Blind fire from cover | Left mouse button without aiming | R2 without aiming | RT without aiming |
| Move around a corner in cover | Spacebar | Square | X |
These are the default bindings listed on the GTA Wiki. A “C” key for ducking that you may see in videos comes from add-ons, not the standard game.
How to Crouch Behind Cover
Cover is the closest thing to a combat stance. Walk up to a car, wall, crate or barrier and press the cover button. Behind a low object your character crouches automatically; behind a tall one, he stands with his back to it.
From cover you can:
- Hold aim to pop up or lean out and fire with the crosshair.
- Fire without aiming to blind fire. It is less accurate, but you stay hidden.
- Push the stick along the object to shuffle sideways, and use the corner button to slip around an edge.
- Press the cover button again to leave.
Pick solid cover. Concrete, brick and engine blocks stop bullets far better than wooden fences, and cars can catch fire and explode if they take too many hits.

How to Use Stealth Mode
Press Left Ctrl, L3 or the left stick to enter Stealth Mode. Your character hunches forward and moves quietly, which makes it easier to sneak up on enemies and perform silent melee takedowns from behind. It gives no protection from bullets, so it is a tool for avoiding a fight, not for winning one.
Per the GTA Wiki, tapping the sprint button in Stealth Mode starts a quick stealth run, while holding it switches to a normal sprint and cancels the stance. Each character’s Stealth skill improves as you move around in this stance.
Is There Crouching in GTA Online?
Not as a standalone move. GTA Online uses the same cover system and Stealth Mode as the campaign, and as of our check on 20 October 2026, Rockstar has not added a free crouch in any update.
Ducking on demand is not new to the series: GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas both had it, which is why many returning players look for it.
Crouch Mods for PC
On PC, single-player fans can add a real crouch with community scripts. A well-known example is the Stance crouch and prone script by jedijosh920 on GTA5-Mods, which needs Script Hook V. Add-ons like this are for single-player only. Rockstar has long said that modifying its online mode is not allowed, and doing so can get your account banned. Many roleplay servers on FiveM, the separate multiplayer platform Rockstar now owns, add their own ducking commands, but these vary from server to server.
Want to put these moves to use? Stealth and cover matter most in the heists covered in our GTA 5 missions guide. And if you mostly stream the game rather than run it locally, see our page on cloud streaming options for the latest on that service and its alternatives.
